It is hard for me to get out and exercise like I want to because of my little ones, so I heavily rely on exercise DVDs, treadmill, or walks outside (when I can get them!)

I do recommend the Jillian Michaels DVD if you want to push your limits. She is kind of "rough", but I can already feel results after a week. My endurance level is definitely higher, AND I can do crunches without feeling like I am ripping my abs apart, so they must be getting stronger! :D

ab2nw, I'm going to advocate for cycling. It's more expensive than running but cheaper than most other outdoor sports. It's also much easier on your joints. (I'm 58; I should know.) And the folks that make jogging strollers also make bike trailers and trail-a-bikes. So I'm going to ask you a question:

Do you think you could bike to work? I live just under four miles from my workplace (a school), and I ride most days all year round. It's a great way to get in some "base miles" and I save a few gallons of gas every month. Before you say "no" consider some of the possibilities. You could drive part way and ride the rest if riding the total distance is too far. If day care is on the way, leave your child and car there and bike the rest of the way. Or you could haul the kid in a bike trailer to day care and drop kid and trailer off.

I think it's great if you can get back into running, and there must be a running club nearby that you can train with. It's a bike club that keeps me on the road for other than commuting. I typically ride with stronger riders, and over time I've become one of them. I had no idea I was capable of this level of athleticism. (I avoided all sports as a child.) Yet I rode 59 miles today, with 3000' of elevation gain and averaged over 16 mph. The last 20 miles four of us rode together non-stop in less than an hour.

Most of us far underestimate what we are capable of.

Jogging strollers ROCK. They did not have them when my kids were little. I would have made my husband take one of the kids with him when he jogged, back then. I know it is hard when you have little ones. My mother in law helped me out a lot back then ,too. I have a bunch of DVDs but never use them. Maybe that could work for you. Jogging with your son in the stroller sounds like a good plan to me.

I really don't have any friends who are into running that I could really count on. I have a 3yo son and he has become my running partner from his jogging stroller. I looked into joining a gym but the only one around with child care offered is not a place that I would feel comfortable leaving my son. I work p/t but my son is in pre-school while I work so I really don't have much time to workout without him. I do work for the Navy so if I get out early I do hit the base gym but I can't count on that. So far, we have been running outside early in the AM and that usually works until I have a lazy morning!
I lost the weight doing Weight Watchers from home. It really worked for me and helped change my lifestyle. I now am aware of what I am eating and really watch my portions. Of course, I do have my weak moments still and I have learned that is ok too.

Hi Ab2nw,

Do you have a friend to run with? It really helps. Also, can you join a gym? The trainers there will put you on a program of lifting weights according to your needs.
Loosing 60 lbs. is amazing. How did you do it? I try to "eat clean" and drink lots of water.

Can I join? I have been dieting for a while but my exercise program comes and goes in waves. I'm very proud of the fact that I have lost 60lbs in the past 18 months but I really need to tone. I'm done losing weight and am happy with my size but I want to look trimmer. I would like to do the Navy OCS grad run and while I was running a lot last summer I stopped running in the winter. I love to ski so my winter was filled with skiing instead. I need someone to motivate me and make me run again!

WAY TO GO!!!!!

We PCS on teusday so my working out has been a little distracted. However at the end of the day I have been feeling exhausted! Moving has got to count for something :wink:

I've passed 3500 miles on the bike so far this year. I ended last year with just over 8100 miles, and I'm well ahead of this time last year.

that bikram yoga sounds interesting, don't know if any places offer it around here though....might have to look into it. Today I did 40min of the elliptical and then some reps of reg and twisting crunches on the workout ball. It felt really good...I am going to try to go everyday so I can look HOT when I see hubby again, and it give me something to do! :)

One of bike club members posted a "report" after attending a "Hot Yoga" class. His description had both me and my wife laughing hard. I think I'll stick to bike riding. Got in 52 miles today in cool weather. 4500 feet of elevation gain.

About 3-1/2 years ago I followed my doctor's orders to reduce my LDL by controlling my diet. (He already knew how much I ride.) Not only did it work, but my weight dropped to the healthy range for my age and height, and it's stayed that way ever since.

I have heard of Bikram yoga, but I don't think I could handle the heat of it... 8O When I go visit my dh's grandparents in MA, they will have the furnace on in August, and I feel like I am going to die! It reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Elaine visited Jerry's parents in FL and they never put their A/C on. She finally came crawling out of her bedroom, begging them to put it on! :lol:

It obviously works for some people, though, as Lesli proves!

Here is the site for T-Tapp: It is an exercise program by a woman named Theresa Tapp (hence, "T-Tapp"). What I like about it is that there isn't all this running and jumping around. She focuses on your form, so that you can do less reps and get the same, if not better, results. I can do this a lot sooner than I can do Tae Bo after having a baby.

I just ordered a Jillian Michaels DVD today. I can't wait to try it out! She is scary, but I have heard the exercises work wonders.

I have lost a few pounds since dh has been gone-yay!

Anyone try to eat "raw"? I couldn't be 100%, as I don't ascribe to the vegan way of thinking, but it really helps me feel more energetic when I eat way less bready things and meat. :D

I also try to eat "clean", as the above poster said-very, very little processed or boxed/canned things.

Has anyone heard of Bikram Yoga? I do it almost daily. It is a 90 min. workout in a room heated up to 100 degrees F. 26 yoga poses that you hold for 30 sec. or longer. I thought yoga was an easy , streatchy, waste of time. But , this is the hardest thing I 've ever done. Hot, hot , hot,. I run and lift heavy, and nothing compares to this awesome workout. My skin is better, hair, complextion, mental attitude , my whole outlook on life is better. Hard to explain all the benefits. Sweating all the impurities out of your body is so important. You have to drink lots of water through out your day to replace what you sweat. Believe it or not, you begin to crave the heat. It is getting very popular. Ours does not have child care. I wish I'd known about it years ago. It is the fountain of youth as far as I'm concerned.

I also try to eat clean. Just only eat what God put on this earth. Do not eat anything man has changed in any way. Nothing in a box. Mostly meat, eggs, fish, potatoes, rice, oatmeal, and all vegetables and fruits. Combine these in different ways. It is just a fact of life that we can not eat whatever we want and not gain weight. For the rest of our lives we will have to eat clean and work out. You can have cheat meals, once in a while, but not cheat days.

Who is poopie? You sound very knowledgeable. Great advice.

My son is at OCS in Newport. I am so glad I found this website. I am so proud of all your military loved ones. Good luck with the weight loss. Leslie
