Thank you, Punky, and Nicole. That little bit of info helps me feel more connected to my son's life!

Thanks punky!! I thought that I was correct in him going to his gaining squadron right after Jax but I'm glad you confirmed this.

We're in Bangor :) LOVING the weather right now!

I'm assuming your son is an NFO as you mentioned winging in Jax.

I am a P-3 NFO so I can try to help. I did not go through the program your son is though. Just recently they changed that P-3 NFOs go straight to Jax instead of a school in TX like I did. I'm also assuming he is regular P-3s and not EP-3s as there are slight differences.

Your son will be in Jax for about 6-8 months completing training. His training includes advanced flight school as well as the Fleet Replacement Squadron training. He will do simulators, lots of ground school as well as several flights. The training is very lax and there is a lot of down time. There will be periods where he isn't scheduled for 2 weeks sometimes. If they say winging in May - did they give you a firm date? If they did then I would count on that but if they didn't it can be very hard to know much in advance (meaning 1-2 weeks) when it will be as it involves flights which can depend on weather, aircraft availability, etc.. The P-3 aircraft does break a lot and that causes a lot of delays. The program in Jax is so new that when I left 4 months ago they hadn't even started it yet.

Once he wings he will proceed to his fleet squadron which can be located in WA, HI, Jax or Maine (though the Maine squadrons are relocating to Jax so he wouldn't be in Maine for long). He will do SERE on his way to his fleet squadron. They should find out where they are going for their squadron about 5-6 months into training. He will get to list his preferences but they are just preferences. They claim they try to get you where you want to be but in the past 3-5 classes only a handful got the locations they actually wanted.

If you have any P-3 specific questions, feel free to ask. I'm up in Whidbey Island at my first fleet squadron now.
Can anyone give me some information about P3 School in Jacksonville? My son is there.

Thank you so much! I was beginning to think no one had read my post. He still needs to do the SERE training too. I don't think I want to know about that!

Honestly it all depends on the weather. I know thats not the answer you'd like to hear, but if they start having a series of terrible weather and not get their flight time in they'd have to push it back, so it'll probably mid april before they get a secured date for it at the earliest.

Theres no limit to the number of rooms he can book at the lodge on base, he just has to check you all in (or he can go that morning and check all the rooms in and leave keys in your names, etc.)

As for activities, I'm not too sure if they do anything organized or not (hopefully an aviator wife will see this). Theres a lot to do in the area (the flight museum on base is pretty cool, etc). After the winging there are no more "phases." They're done with flight training and its off to their first actual duty station. They'll still be "in training" there, but they will actually be part of the flight group and stationed in that location for 2-3 years.

Good luck!! :)

My son said that the instructors keep mentioning May for the winging, but no specific dates yet. How far out will they likely set a date? Since I plan to go to JAX (and I live in the St. Louis, MO area), I'm trying to plan. Also, is there a limit to how many relatives can stay at the lodge for the festivities? What activities should I plan to do? After the winging, what is likely the next phase? I know that's a lot of questions. Take your time answering them. Thanks for replying!
