Yup I'm here

Post by Jessimilla » Mon Jul 12, 2010 11:02 pm

I just saw this post and thought I would step up and say hello. My hubby is currently going through the signal bloc course also. He just started the week before last. And so far he likes it. :) Like the person above me said it's pretty nice. And we get to see them for dinner. :)

I know it has been awhile since you posted this but I just saw it. My DH is currently in BOLC B - he started a few weeks ago. So far, he has had a good deal of down time. The latest he has ever arrived home was about 5pm, and some days they have gotten off after only a half day. These first few weeks of training has been focused on general officer training and then they will go into the Signal classroom stuff. According to DH, they will do field exercises closer to the end of the course.

As for orders, he doesn't have official ones yet. However, he has had an RFO for awhile now. DH snowbirded here since Sept '08 and he received an RFO a couple of months after he started snowbirding.

If you have any other questions, ask away :) And good luck in the house hunt, if you are still hunting!

Hi ladies! just found out yesterday that my DH class starts on July 27th and ends in November--which is a lot faster than we were thinking! He graduates from OCS on May 20, then we will do hometown recruiting for 2 weeks. I am guessing that we wont be PCSd there, and so the hunt begins!
I have looked a few places online, but I think we will take a trip up from Benning soon.
Whats it like when the hubbies are in BOLC B? Are they gone a lot? Lots of field time ?
I am hoping we can get an accompanied move, but very doubtful since its just barely 6 months ( not 6 months if you count HRAP time).

Now to just know where we will be going after Gordon! Did you guys get orders when they finished BOLC B or were they on the official orders from OCS?
Thanks for help!

I guess each situation is different. We were PCS'd because of the length of time between BOLCII and BOLCIII. He was given orders for Gordon in Feb (Valentine's Day to be exact was the day we got in and got the house), DH's BOLCII didn't begin until May and BOLCIII was like August or something like that. So it was about 9 months out before he even had actual school in Gordon. He had also done some Hometown Recruiting right out of OCS so that pushed our time around a little more as well. Housing was interesting, we got seriously lucky and got a house the same day we got there. And that is pretty much unheard of. The girl in the office made sure we knew that, and we knew that just because my hubby was an officer didn't mean we got preferential treatment (not that we expected that by any means, we just happen to have 3 kids and orders to get there and they had an empty house!). Other than that, I really had no problems at all with housing there.

No, we aren't there anymore, he's been done with all of that since Sept. 08. We are in Hood now, and well, Killeen isn't exactly one of my favorite places. I like Texas, don't get me wrong, there are some really nice places here, but I'm not a huge fan of Killeen. I open my front door and all I see is rooftops, and being from the country I would love to see the occasional tree once in awhile! :D

Fort Gordon is a pretty small post. We enjoyed it while we were there, like I said before, because I am originally from south Georgia and we were in the brand new houses they had built. I loved my house, I'm not even going to lie about that. The housing we were offered here left much to be desired so we chose to stay off post.

I think it's Grovetown, look around there, there might be some more reasonably priced apartments that way. Just remember, traffic coming on and off post is VERY HEAVY. Leave enough time for that.

good news!

I had heard that most people did not get PCSd there. I am so anxious to hear when his class actually starts. I have heard that many are there for 9 months snowbirding. I have looked at apartments in town and they are a bit pricey for 3 bedrooms, any ideas on good places? I am nervous we wont get housing there. I am calling Monday to get my name on the list, and keeping my fingers crossed for a PCS! Is your husband in class now, or done?

Ours was a PCS because of the snowbirding and blackbirding time that we had to do there. We had to blackbird because I had a c-section just before we left and couldn't travel for a few weeks. At any rate, we really loved it there. We were in the new housing and really enjoyed our house and our neighborhood.

I personally like Augusta, but hey, I'm from South Georgia so it was home for me either way!

My husband just branched Signal at OCS today!!! I am so curious about moving there, and wondering about whether it will be a PCS move. I have heard there is a long snowbird time for Signal BOLCB....is that the case? Any info would be great!

My kids love that train table. On post there are lots of nice playgrounds, especially the one by the stables. Augusta has your usual, chuckie cheese and monkey joes too. There is story time at the library each Wed @ 11:00. My kids love that. They do stories and songs and a craft every week.

I am here and have been here since June. My husband is just finishing his OBC and then he is staying longer to do an FA 53 course. Typically it is for Captains and Majors, but they are in serious need of 53 slots and my husband was given the chance to take the class. The only non-prior they are allowing to take it...so I will be here until November or December...because instead of going to Germany after it looks like we are going to 173rd in Italy!!! He doesn't have to stay as an FA 53 officer either...normally...when they take the class they are stuck...but the LTs are not stuck doing it.

Sadly...I am not a fan of Augusta, although...Augusta is better than Columbus....Fort Gordon...eh....but Augusta is a better town than Columbus.

If you have any questions feel free to ask...and Jenn...my husband is in the field this week...so we should get together! I have been so busy!

Sounds good.. btw I love your dog.. hopefully where they put us in Korea they'll allow pets.. I AM ITCHING TO GET A NEW DOG. We had to give ours away because of the kids.. He was a dobie and was getting too wired around the girls.. but lives now with our fam in fl. Do you have kids? I am not one for "playdates" but I was wondering if there is a certain place to let them all loose at once .. we went to barnes and noble out there last weekend and it was INSANITY!!! The drama that a train table creates for kids of all ages... I was rolling the whole time!!!

We are at Gordon now. We live on post. It is okay, definitely not as active as Benning. Augusta has a lot to offer. It is growing on us.

Yea, I was there all last week and weekend.. Totally different to Columbus!! Better I think, the base seems to be okay.. typical tech school base with nothing too fancy. I wasn't able to make it downtown yet, but I was pretty impressed with the Augusta Mall... Target was pretty cool too. I always said you can judge an area on how well they maintain their Targets and Walmarts.. so far I am pretty impressed.

We found a really nice place in Grovetown in the Main Street Subdivision. it should do its job for the 6 months we are there.. kinda sucks we just got settled into the house at Benning we moved into 3 months ago....

We just got orders to Korea 2 days ago... pretty awesome..

Anyway... so what is there to do out at Gordon?

Aloha.

I was at my hubby's graduation for this. It's not as formal as the OCS graduation, but it still was a nice event to attend.

They also had an informal formal dinner (if that makes sense) for the graduating class.

I had fun, and if you can go, I would. There aren't too many "events" like this afterwards.

There were families (parents and wives) at the graduation, and I mainly only saw spouses at the dinner.

Hope that helps!
